“The London Summer Olympics is a parade of the finest athletes on earth. They play while billions of us stand still to watch, awed by their magnificent maneuverings of the same human body as ours. They rule their world.”

The business tag line of a popular Nigerian telecommunications company is so captivating I can hardly get it off my mind: “Rule Your World.” As far as business promotion goes, that works. But as for how the universe works, you will never rule the world with a mere gadget. Rather, I have seen people ruled by their gadgets. They never get their thumbs off BB nor unplug their head phone to participate in a meaningful conversation.

However, you can rule your world with passion. You can rule the world by discovering your divinely ordained purpose, and applying your talents and abilities.
I have always been fascinated by people with talent. Every Hall of Famer is a person of talent. Every Nobel, Oscar or Academy award is an affirmation of talent. Every roll call of greatness in various fields has the common element of talent. The London Summer Olympics is a parade of the finest athletes on earth. They play while billions of us stand still to watch, awed by their magnificent maneuverings of the same human body as ours. They rule their world.

When Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian with 20 medals, and whom Sports Illustrated claimed to be “universally recognized as the greatest swimmer in history,” arrived London, the world stood at attention. Pat Forde,Yahoo! Sports’ national college columnist, reported Phelps’ interview this way: “Phelps had his own press conference here … playing to an auditorium jammed with journalists from around the world. That is standard operating procedure at the Olympics for Phelps; when you’ve won 14 gold medals, you can have the stage to yourself.”
Do you own a press conference? Ruling the world, having the stage to yourself, is a standard operating procedure for men and women of talent. King Solomon of old once noted, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men.” I have often marveled at the high places to which talented Nigerian comedians are invited to perform. Talent takes them to presidential villas around the world. Talent is a neglected source of power.
Does everyone have talent? How may you discover yours? What should you do with your talent? Talent is like a seed. Everyone has it but it must be planted before it can yield a harvest. Be authentic. Stop being like other people.  Know thyself. Your talent is your cutting edge. Find it, build it, use it, and rule your world.
